OK, now let's be completely honest here. After all that is how we learn the most, right? This is not a so-so photo. This is a completely TERRIBLE photo in every sense: out of focus, "devil eyes" (animal version of red eye), poor lighting, etc. They don't get much worse. So with such a bad starting point, yes, this was a valiant effort at rescuing something in the painting process. Hopefully, however this will serve as a prime example of one of the most important rules to remember in photo painting: The better the photo to use as a starting point, the better the end result (painting/smudge) will be. There is no such thing as "fixing" a terrible photo in Photoshop or any other program. A terrible photo can be repaired with careful and tedious work to make it an OK photo, however when starting with a beautiful photo one can crate a truly magnificent work of art through the wonders of painting. The old saying "Garbage in, garbage out" applies to most things in life, photo post processing included.

That said, again it was quite a rescue attempt on the part of the OP. Lots of hard work to get it this far, I'm sure. Just think what you could have done with a good photo!

I few more points.

If the the dog is not dead, then have your friend reshoot, outdoors. Tell them to get down on the dog's level and wait for a good shot. But looking up the nose is not advisable, make it a side shot a little, to include both eyes from above nose view. But first take the colar off and comb the dog to hide the colar line and comb the rest to show a respect to the photo session. I bet the dog will rise to the ocassion and pose nicely for the photo session!

Thank you Lisa, Murry, and Gale (nice to see you here as well ) fluffy animals are a lot easier to smudge i think !

And thank you Bross and lamar for you photography lessons

It goes without saying that the better the photograph the better the outcome will be, which is why i and others are grateful for both Fred and Gale who put up photographs of a higher quality than what i for one can produce ( being just a happy snapper with a very low end budget camera)

I did take more photo's and this one was the worst which is why i used it ! ! Funny the collar should be mentioned because the owner likes the collar on ! Can't win them all i find
