Flower girl hi-key smudge

Postby Lisa on Sun Mar 30, 2008 10:28 pm

YIKES! I hate to follow Scott's Santa Claus but I decided to take Fred's little flower girl and make a hi-key smudge out of it. Had a hard time with the bride's arm as I really wanted to have some texture of the dress, but it wasn't working out as I had planned. I really, really liked this image

Lisa,
This is really nice, I love what you did to this.
She is a real beauty isn't she, and Fred did a great job getting that lovely little face at just the right moment.

Great, Lisa! I've always felt that smudge and hi-key technique are perfect partners - and you've proven that here! This is really a perfect subject for this kind of a treatment. You really are a master with hi-key. Beautiful!

You guys are FAR too kind. I think that Fred's photography has a lot to do with the results on this one. I'm glad you all like the hi-key....I love doing them :)

Very Nice Lisa!

What was your workflow?

B&W 1st or Smudge color then B&W?

How did you get to B&W? Hi-Key etc.

Thanks,
Lamar

Hi Ronnie and Lamar:

I always smudge in color first because I like to look at the subtle tone changes particularly in the skin as I smudge. When doing black and white first, sometimes the roundness of the cheeks can end up flat because I don't see those gradual changes.

Anyway, the tutorial can be found here: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp ... ge=3842725 Lisa Neal gets credit for this wonderful tutorial. I am NOT Lisa Neal and have been mistaken for her because we share the same first name LOL!

One thing I have been doing is taking a smudge directly into Painter and adding some of Painter's effects to the final image. I'll post one in the Painter forum so you can see what I mean.
