Ok, this one has taken me about 10 hours! First I smudged, then I took it into painter, and then back into photoshop. I like it, I think. What do you guys think?

Wonderful Jo! Very painterly :)
I am trying to get a handle on painter. Can you give me an idea of your workflow?
You smudged in PS, then did you smudge more in painter or was it cloning? What brushes did you use?

If you try Maggie the bulldog with this same style I'd love to see it.

Jordan, here is my workflow, as far as I can remember.

PS
Smudge
Paint duabs
anso
Buzz

Painter
Degas Add color brush set to clone
using same brush set to paint touch up shadow and highlights

PS
using Trimoon's soften edges brush set about 4% go around the edges and hard lines to blend into the background. Background is on a separate layer.

Hope this helps

Thank you for the workflow Jo!
I don't think I am familiar with the Degas brush. Do you remember where you got it?

It is a piece of software that simplifies your image, with some great results, i had it quite a while ago and never really got on with it, but now i use it a lot. The problem being now is that the company has folded, but there are some trial downloads around and both retouchpro and dpr have posts on the subject well worth reading
