I found this image at stockvault and thought it might be good for anyone who wants to have smudge so that we can compare different styles, etc (not ability)
it would be interesting to see how you would do the cardigan or the hair for instance

Very good Palms, I quite like the cardie as you've done it.
Though I tried to keep the texture of it here, with a outline sketch layer above the smudge.

nice one Peter, and a good idea to use a sketch layer over the smudge to keep a "knitted look" i will have to store that one for in the future

Palms, yours is a really charming rendition of the child. I love it!

(I think it would help the image if you remove the sharpening halo along the left edge of her face.)

Both are very nice. Palms, I really like the way you did her eyes. My version looks a little scary. I had trouble with the hair too.

I painted several versions of this cute little girl, but decided to submit only this one to avoid consuming too much space within the thread. I chose to leave this image at its original painted resolution because it lost too much of the painterly effect when I compressed it. I also canvas textured a version of this image, but liked the purer more realistic version(in my view) submitted here. The final image which I chose not to submit places her in an Elysian field of flowers. Thanks for viewing..

Nancy i like your version and dont find it scary, I think the most of us would of had trouble with the hair
Easy way of inserting a image into a post is to click the link under the reply window where it says add image and then browse to where your image is and upload

Nice work Patre I like the background and the frame as well, please do post your other version if you like, the different background would be nice to see

Its the subtle lighting on the face and the background "white" halo shading of the girl's body that I like on this one. I also liked the realistic aging effect..

Here are a couple more versions of this image. In the first picture, the girl is painted, but the background flower garden is not. In the second image, both the girl and the flower garden background is painted. I liked the first one better because it had a more pristine and photographically authentic look, but I wasn't sure whether mixed media was appropriate for this forum. Finally, The third image attempts to give the image an otherworldly effect.
I really debated on whether or not to post all of these images, but I eventually decided that they would be good fodder for comment, if nothing else. And I figure that someone will sagely advise me, if I have exceeded the limits of propriety.

Nancy,
You did a terrific job of maintaining the texture of the little girl's sweater. You must have individually painted each of those strands. Very nice work! I also like the watercolor effect and colors of the background. The watercolor effect and the background colors blend perfectly with the foreground image. Finally, I like the soft line framing of the portrait and the very artistic character and placement of your signature on the portrait page.

Thank you for posting these other images, it is always good to see different interpretations of images both in the smudging and processing
( i am not sure but as we use links ( including the add image function} we are not clogging up space on this forum ) and so long as the main object is smudged i think mixed media is ok ( not sure if we even have a moderator here or one that regularly looks in?)

Any way funnily enough i like the second flower background better i know you might want to know why but i think it is just personal preference, and not too sure about your third one i like the simplicity of the background but may well of lightened across the face area

Palms, you did a great job on this. The ageing looks very natural and real.
Patre, I like your second verion also. I think because the flowers are softer.
I didn't smudge the little girls sweater at all. I was in a hurry so I put a slight jiggle effect on it an then some heavy sharpening.

Its amazing what a few changes, subtle and otherwise, can make in rendering the theme and psychological character of the image. Here change of background and position of the little girl allow for a different perspective on and interpretation of the little girl's character and life circumstances..

Very hard to keep up with all the posts. Suffice it to say that Palms' original post has brought out oodles of great talent, imagination and a wide variety of smudging/painting styles. It's hard not to like every one of them -- for differing reasons.

I like the deeply saturated and change of hue eyes. Same question as Jo on the sweater. It looks to me like you might have used a watercolor filter on the sweater, or duped the sweater layer with the top layer in the overlay blending mode. Then you might have painted the top layer with a white brush at medium or lower opacity in order to achieve the watercolor effect. It will be interesting to see what you really did do to maintain the sweater's stranded look.

Jo and Patre, I used the AHB for the sweater -- specifically, Trimoon's AHB Spatter 15A at 20 pixels, followed by his TM Detail Brush at 5 or 6 pixels to bring back details like the zipper, some edges, etc.

I did wonder if you would use ahb for the cardigan and i was right

great work ( my favourite brushes those )
And the eyes are super love the dual colour

It has been great to see all the different versions and styles and way's round different obstacles and maybe there will be some more yet !
