smudge help..

Postby Patre on Tue Jul 14, 2009 8:18 am

Glad to help if I can, Nuke..

First, it is always a good idea to have a hi-resolution image which you have adjusted for color, lighting, clarity.composition etc., before you start to paint.

Then, when you paint, it is important to choose the correct size brush with the proper opacity(strength level) in order to achieve the painterly effect without deforming(usually meaning smearing) the image.

Finally. when you have finished painting there are some filters that you can apply which enhance the painterly effect. The type of filter and how you apply it will usually depend on the paint program you are using. i.e.Photoshop,Corel etc.

There is a ton of other information that would probably be useful to you,but I hesitate to post it here without viewing the image you are painting.

If you post the image, we could start by directing your efforts on different sections of the painting. For example, how to paint the skin tones on different parts of the body.

There are also many free tutorials on the internet. Just google "smudge painting" and you will be gifted with an abundance of helpful information.

You can purchase basic smudge painting video tutorials at this site:

All the best,

Oscar,

The download information for basic free smudge brushes can be found here:
http://www.innographx.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3666

By "How to" in Photoshop I assume you mean How to smudge paint using the Photoshop program. here are some web pages that provide tutorials that might be helpful to you:

http://www.innographx.com/forum/viewtop ... f=5&t=3745

http://www.innographx.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=947

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read. ... e=13999204

Information on how to use the features and tools in photoshop can be found here:

http://www.cellbio.duke.edu/faculty/kli ... /help.html

Photoshop's work flow protocols are similar in most versions of Photoshop, so even though this information was created for Photoshop 7, most of the work flow strategies should apply to later versions of photoshop.

I tried to copy your image to my desktop, but the referral URL translates to an Assembly language page when the image file is opened. My suggestion would be to save the image to a site like Image Shack, then link it to this forum.

Here is the Image Shack web address:

http://imageshack.us/

My suggestion would be to either use one of Sara's hair brushes on the dog starting at low opacity or use Linda's smudge brush at low opacity. Experiment until you get an effect you like.

Hope that some of this information works for you.
